You may wonder why I chose this topic to write about: how to overcome sinful desires in your heart. Because I have sinful desires in my heart, these sinful desires sometimes try to rule over me.
When I think I have the devil beat on one immoral issue, he comes from behind me with another lousy case.
When I started this walk with Jesus in July 2020, I noticed Satan was attacking my mind. He may have been flooding my mind all along, but I hadn’t seen it. I once thought I was such an awful sinner that I was the only beginning believer Satan attacked.
I discovered many believers are also struggling with sin, so Satan is attacking their minds too. But these experienced believers have learned how to battle with Satan, so this Godly lifestyle is much easier for them.
We may never be able to extinguish all of our sinful desires because of our sinful nature, but there are some things we can do. The Bible states, “Put on the whole armor of God” to overcome these sinful desires. Ephesians 6:11-18
1 Peter 2:11 ERV In the words of Saint Peter – Dear friends, you are like visitors and strangers in this world. So, I beg you to keep your lives free from the evil things you want to do, those desires that fight against your true selves.
My biggest sinful desires were primarily sexual sins, although I committed other types of sins, plus other sins I did not know I was committing. I often wondered why Jesus let me go on sinning for so long; he could have stopped me back then; the same way he stopped me this time.
There are certain sins I cannot commit, such as murder, burglary, rape, robbery, etc.. But there are sins I can commit; I guess I got carried away with my sexual sins because I have many. Believe it or not, sexual sins carry a heavier penalty than others.
Some people probably can completely stop or control their sinful desires, but I have not made it there yet. I am still struggling. Jesus has helped me a great deal with my struggles against sin; hopefully, one day, I will be in control, like other believers.
I guess the key to controlling my sinful desires is learning how to resist Satan. Satan manipulates my mind, which causes me to want to participate in some sin. Not a day goes by that Satan is not trying to mess with my mind.
If Jesus is not a part of your life yet, you are probably wondering if trying to live a Godly life is so complex that it’s not worth the effort; why not live a worldly life? The problem is that once Jesus comes into your life, you only want to live a Godly life, no matter what you must endure to achieve and maintain that lifestyle.
Some people once lived a Godly life, but they no longer do for some reason. Several reasons could cause them to turn away from Jesus; I will not even try to determine what those reasons are.
I will tell you this: when you ask Jesus for help in a particular situation and He does not help you as you planned, He would, that is not a reason to turn your back on Jesus.
Jesus has your best interests in mind when he makes decisions for you, whether you like them or not. If you decide to live a worldly lifestyle, that is your choice; Jesus won’t be mad at you, but there is a heavy penalty to pay.
